Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a common synthetic polymer widely used in the lubricant additive, sealant, chewing gum base, and adhesive industries. Although PIB is not classified as a dangerous good for global transport, improper storage and transportation can alter its viscosity, introduce impurities, and shorten its shelf life, directly affecting the performance of the final product and ultimately impacting the interests of bulk buyers. Many wholesale customers overlook subtle environmental factors; therefore, based on our extensive export experience, we have compiled the following practical storage and transportation guidelines.
Temperature control is crucial for PIB storage. For long-term storage, we recommend maintaining the ambient temperature below 40°C. Sustained high temperatures slowly degrade the polymer chains, causing viscosity drift; while extremely low temperatures make PIB viscous and stiff, increasing the difficulty of unloading and melt processing. Warehouses should be kept cool, well-ventilated, and protected from direct sunlight, especially for drummed products. All PIB containers should always be kept sealed to prevent dust and moisture contamination. Although polyisobutylene (PIB) has some water resistance, prolonged exposure to moisture can contaminate its surface and affect the quality of food-grade and cosmetic-grade raw materials.
When planning warehouse layout, PIB should be stored separately from strong oxidants, concentrated acids, and other reactive chemicals. Do not stack drums too high to avoid deformation and leakage. Smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited in the warehouse. Although PIB is not flammable, it decomposes at high temperatures, releasing flammable gases and posing a potential safety hazard. Sealed polyisobutylene (PIB) typically has a shelf life of up to 24 months under suitable storage conditions.
For overseas shipping, drums, IBC containers, or ISO tank containers can be selected depending on order volume. During road and sea transport, drums should be placed upright and securely fixed inside the container to prevent rolling, collisions, and packaging damage. In hot seasons, it is recommended to avoid prolonged direct sunlight during transportation. Rain and seawater must be prevented from splashing onto the drums to protect the integrity of labels and packaging.
Our factory provides complete Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and shipping documents for each batch of polyisobutylene (PIB). Our technical team can provide customized storage recommendations based on different molecular weight grades. If you require in-house training materials for warehouse operators, we can also provide relevant technical guidance to help you maintain product quality stability after receiving large shipments.
