Functional Characteristics
Liquid Xenon serves as both an active target and detection medium. In a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC), particle interactions generate immediate scintillation light (S1 signal) and ionization electrons. These electrons are drifted by an electric field and extracted into the gas phase, producing a proportional electroluminescence signal (S2). The precise measurement of the S1 and S2 signals, along with their timing and ratio, allows for precise energy measurement, 3D position resolution, and powerful particle identification (e.g., nuclear recoil vs. electron recoil discrimination).
